Dwight Lyman

June 27, 1927 — June 1, 2024

Dwight (Bub) O. Lyman, 96, of Olathe, Kansas passed away at Benton House of Olathe, June 1, 2024. He was born on June 27, 1927 in Burlington, Kansas to Oswald and Leta (Lucas) Lyman.

He grew up in Kansas City, Kansas. Because he always struggled in school, he dropped out after beginning the eighth grade. With little education Bub worked at any job he could find. That included everything from delivering milk to working for a fireworks company.

On July 3, 1949 he had his first date with the prettiest girl he had ever seen, Etta Grandstaff. They were married three months later, on September 30, 1949. Linda was born on October 26, 1950. Their family was complete when Donna was born on August 25, 1952.

In his early 20's, Bub worked as a heavy construction laborer. He found a career from which he could make a living, and liked it. He worked many long, hard hours. Over time, Bub was promoted to foreman, superintendent, and eventually one of Tri-City Construction Company's vice presidents. He had come a long way from the days of delivering milk as a boy with little education.

After leaving Tri-City, he started his own company, Bub Lyman Construction, in 1985. With his previous years of experience, along with the many relationships he established, Bud's company was extremely successful from the beginning. Later he added a street plate rental into the mix. Etta ran the office. They were a team.

In 1990, it was time to retire. He and Etta, built a home on 18 acres at 75th and K7 in Shawnee in 1970. Those last years were spent maintaining a large vegetable garden, various berry plants, fruit trees, and raising cattle. At one point in time, he had three different ponds stocked with fish on the property. Bub especially looked forward to fishing with the grandchildren, and taking them for rides on the tractor. Linda and Donna remember how he always rescued them when they needed help. If they locked themselves out of their cars, needed handy-work done at home, whatever the need, he was there.

When Etta passed away in 2016, he sold the house and property. He recognized at 88, that he was slowing down, and with her gone, it just was not the same. Bub moved to Paola, Kansas, and lived there alone for six years. From August 2022, until his death, his home was Benton House of Olathe. He lived a long life, accomplished more than he ever could have imagined, and made his family proud.

Bub is survived by his daughter Linda Landrum (Dennis); son-in-law Dennis Whiteford; grandchildren; Kelly (Michelle), Keith (Amanda); great grandchildren; Samantha (Daniel), Tyler, Hayden, Reghan, Aislyn. Great, great grandchildren; Lionel, Marisol, and Fernando.

Preceding him in death; his father, Oswald; mother, Leta, wife; Etta; sisters; Lottie, Doreen; daughter, Donna.
