Dr. William E. McCann, M.D., 79, Olathe, KS, passed away Tuesday,
December 18, 2001 after a courageous battle with heart disease. Funeral
services will be 10:00a.m., Saturday, December 22, at Prince of Peace Catholic
Church, 16000 W. 143rd Street, Olathe, KS. Internment will be in Resurrection
Cemetery, Lenexa, KS. Visitation will be Friday, December 21, 2001, from
5 - 8pm, at Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 14275 S. Blackbob Road, Olathe,
KS. A Rosary will be said at 7pm. The family suggest memorial contributions to St. Jude's
Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105.
Dr. McCann was born January 14, 1922 in Conception Junction, Missouri, the son of John Henry
and Louise J. (McCarty) McCann.
Dr. McCann was a member of the Boy Scouts and achieved Eagle Scout stature. He was also an
assistant director for the Boy Scout organization in Abilene, KS. He graduated from Sacred Heart
in Salina, KS in 1940. In 1943 he graduated from St. Benedict's College in Atchison, KS with a
triple major in Science, Chemistry and Mathematics. Postgraduate work was continued at S.E.
Missouri State University. He received his MD from Oklahoma University School of Medicine in
1948.
In 1942 Dr. McCann enlisted in the United States Navy. He was Lt. Commander and senior
medical officer aboard the USS Rochester during the Korean War. He retired at the rank of Full
Commander.
He married Betty Jean (Finks) McCann on January 14, 1950 in Tulsa, OK. In 1952, Dr. McCann
established his practice as a physician/surgeon in Olathe. Dr. McCann was instrumental in building
the first Olathe Community Hospital. He served his patients and friends for more than 34 years.
Passionate about flying, he was a member in both the Olathe Skyway Travelers and Flying
Physicians organizations. He was appointed the FAA Medical Examiner and for several years
worked as an airport commissioner. In 1969 he won the Doctor Colvern D. Henry Aviation Medical
Examiners Award out of 7,200 candidates. Hunting, swimming, and friends were a few of his many
favorite past times.
Proceeding him in death was his sister Rita Bland.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 51 years, Betty McCann of the home, six daughters: Patricia
L. Neis and husband Thomas of Wheeling, WV, Donna S. Pecherski and husband Henry of
Chesterfield, MO, Norma J. Manns and husband Jim of Overland Park, KS, Pamela K. McCann
of Overland Park KS, Margaret M. Bardsley and husband Kevin of Issaquah, Washington, Barbara
M.. Luckner and husband Bob of Highlands Ranch, CO; sisters; Mary McCann, MD, Overland
Park, KS; Martha Wisniewski, and husband Irv, Newark, DE, Lina Doyle and husband Bob, Mt.
Prospect, IL, brother John McCann and wife Betty, nineteen grandchildren and one great
grandchild, and many endearing friends.
William E. McCann always loved to share his stories, with humor and laughter. He was a man in
his glory, a true kid at heart. He will be truly missed.
