Dr. Grant Bradshaw Hatfield, Jr., born on the 4th of July, 1920, in Kansas City, MO, peacefully passed away on August 15, 2015, at age 95. A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 21st, at Country Club Congregational United Church of Christ, 205 W. 65th St., Kansas City, MO, followed by a private interment. "Pappy," as he was called by his lifelong friends, practiced Orthodontia for 44 years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of the American, Missouri and Kansas City dental associations, the American Association of Orthodontists, the Charles H. Tweed Foundation for Orthodontic Research, the American Board of Orthodontics, and also served on the Orthodontic Specialty Board for the state of Missouri. He attended Border Star Elementary and Southwest High School. At Southwest, he was a standout on the track team and the City champion in the half-mile. He attended the University of Kansas where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and the KU track team. He received his dental degree from UMKC, was a part time instructor at the school for 23 years, and was named the 1994 Orthodontic Alumnus of the year. During WWII, he was a captain in the Army Air Corps and served as a dentist in Okinawa and the Philippines. He served on the board of trustees at The Barstow School, was a former member of the Mercury, Vanguard and Saddle & Sirloin Clubs, was a member of the Kansas City Country Club, and a life member of the Country Club Congregational United Church of Christ in Brookside. Grant volunteered for Meals on Wheels for 24 years. His love of horses and western art led him through many western art galleries and museums in Santa Fe, Scottsdale, and Oklahoma City. He was an accomplished artist and sculptor. For years, he enjoyed growing roses to compete in the annual Loose Park Rose Show, tennis, riding horses and motorcycles across Staley Farms, and traveling. Grant will always be remembered for his contagious laugh and wonderful sense of humor. He will be dearly missed by his family, daughter Ann Hatfield Lane (Gary), Paradise Valley, AZ, son Thomas Grant Hatfield (Lynn), grandchildren Staley and Calin Lane, Jennifer Noone (Chris), Dallas, Kurt Lane, Portland, OR, Kristin Switzer (Nick), Tulsa, Whitney Hoefer (Derek), great granddaughter Hannah Switzer, nephew Martin Hatfield (Fiona), Hamilton, Bermuda, and niece Peggy Hatfield, Raleigh, NC.
