DR. BRUCE W. GALE
Dr. Bruce W. Gale, 70, of Olathe, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
Bruce was born April 19, 1938 in Saratoga Springs, New York, to Willis and Ruth Gale. He was a 1960 graduate of Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, then attended the University of Illinois Medical School, graduating from the University of Costa Rica Medical School in 1968. He and his wife Sonja Gale remained in Costa Rica as medical missionaries until 2003 after 39 years of service.
Bruce's desire to serve God as a medical missionary was identified as early as 9 years old by his family. This desire started to crystallize in the summer of 1955 when he went on a missionary trip to Costa Rica with a quartet from his high school. Throughout his student years, Bruce's goal was to return as a doctor which then became a reality when he transferred his medical studies to the University of Costa Rica.
Throughout his medical career, Bruce was relentless in his pursuit for serving the poor and needy in any way possible. This included serving local orphanages, weekend medical trips to remote areas of Costa Rica, and emergency relief trips to other Central American countries.
In addition to serving as a medical doctor, Bruce and Sonja also served as pastors, having planted two churches in the San Jose area, and ministered there until their return to the United States in 2003.
Upon returning to the United States, Bruce and Sonja became actively involved at Olathe Christian Fellowship, and more recently, Bruce resumed his medical practice at the Clínica Médica serving the Hispanic community of the greater Kansas City area.
Bruce is survived by his wife Sonja, his son Jonathan (PHD) and daughter-in-law Cindy, daughter Mary Beth and son-in-law Eddy, son Timothy, son Richard and daughter-in-law Susana. Grandchildren are David, Amy, Stephanie, Kathryn, Daniel, Benjamin, Kelly, Jeremy, Joseph, and Lisa. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents and only brother Van Gale.
