Dr. Awad A. Ismir, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, entered life with Christ on April 2, 2020.
A private graveside service will be held at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Stanley, KS.
Dr. Ismir was born March 19, 1937 in Jerusalem. He received his elementary and high school education in the Holy Land and graduated from St. George's Anglican High School, 1953.
At age 16, he came to America to pursue his college education. He completed his AA degree at Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, and BA degree at Concordia Lutheran College in Moorhead, MN. He earned his MA and Ph.D. degrees at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, ND. He was a licensed Clinical Psychologist and held license #1 in the state of North Dakota.
Dr. Ismir was married to Yvonne Pongrazzi on July 29, 1961 in Norristown, PA. He worked at the State Psychiatric Clinic in Bismarck, ND from 1962 – 1965. He worked at the North Dakota State Hospital from 1965-1997, in Jamestown, North Dakota, and held numerous positions at the State Hospital, including Director of Psychology, Director of Forensic Services, Assistant Superintendent of Clinical Affairs, and Acting Superintendent of the State Hospital.
Dr. Ismir served as Professor of Psychology to the University of North Dakota Medical School, North Dakota State University, and Jamestown College. He was a consultant to Vocational Rehabilitation, North Dakota Law Enforcement Council, North Dakota Special Education, North Dakota State Penitentiary, The Ann Carlson Crippled Children's School and several nursing homes. From 1996-1999 he was associated with Merit Care Medical Clinic, and after retirement in 1999, he and Yvonne moved to Overland Park, KS. They are members of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Dr. Ismir was preceded in death by his father (Abdallah), mother (Kadrah), his oldest brother (Samih) and sister Soumayah Nasrallah. He is survived by Yvonne, his wife and best friend of 68+ years. His children, Denise (Robert) Helms, Aledo, TX, David (Debra) Ismir, Fort Worth, TX, grandchildren Austin and Alex Helms, Isaiah and Jacob Ismir, and Laney Yvonne Hanna. Also surviving are great-grand-daughter Blakely Paige, brothers Zahi (Marilyn) of Brainerd, MN and Basem (Mary) Blue Springs, MO.
