Douglas Lumsden

November 1, 1935 — January 3, 2020

Douglas Lumsden, 84, of Overland Park, passed away on January 3, 2020 at Olathe Hospice House.

He was born on November 1, 1935 to Robert and Maggie (Taylor) Lumsden in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Douglas enlisted in the Royal Navy and was honored to serve as a green beret Royal Marines Commando.
He moved to the United States when he was 23 years old. One of his first jobs in Kansas City, MO was as a ballroom dance instructor at Ray Quinlan Dance Studios. In 1957, Shirley (Ford) Hill was a student in one of his classes. On April 23, 1960, Douglas and Shirley were married in Independence, MO.

Douglas apprenticed as a stone mason, and at one time was a rail road conductor in Aberdeen, Scotland. In the United States, besides being a dance instructor, he held various labor and sales positions early in his career. He found his professional stride as a top Regional Sales Manager for Comoys of London, retiring in 1996.

He was a lifelong member of the Kansas City St. Andrew's Society, and proudly served a term as president for the Society. He was also a member of the the Kansas City St. Andrew Society Pipes & Drums, and enjoyed assisting with organizing the Scottish highland games, annual dinner celebrations and other Scottish events.

Douglas was a great listener and an avid story teller; glad to offer advice when asked, quick witted and ready to flash a slow and sly smile. Frequently referred to as a well dressed, charming, true gentlemen. He was a friend to all and a wonderful role model. He often said the purpose of life is to be useful, honorable and compassionate; most of all to make a difference for others. His legacy is one of strength, grace and love.

Douglas is survived by his loving daughters, Kerry Lancaster (husband Larry) of Gardner, KS, Janice O'Connor (husband Chuck) of Olathe, KS, and Tina Scheppers (husband Steve) of Olathe, KS, daughter-in-law Janice Turner of Topeka, KS, eight grandchildren: Mindy Kitterman (husband David), Shawn Morris, Joseph Grooms, James Grooms, Cheri Thorne (husband Chet), Tim O'Connor, Henry Hill, Ian Mercer and eleven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, his parents, brothers Robert Lumsden and Alec Lumsden, and sister Edith (Lumsden) Bratton.
