Dorothy L. Zimmerman

April 9, 1930 — November 14, 2018

Dorothy Lea (Nevius) Zimmerman (88) passed away at Good Samaritan Nursing Home on November 14, 2018 after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. She was born on April 9, 1930, the first of four children born to Mary (LaRosh) and Samuel Nevius. Her parents and her brother Wayne predeceased her. Her brother, Bill (Wanda) lives in Spring Hill and her brother Edward (Anna) lives in Rockville Maryland.

Dorothy and her three younger brothers lived and worked on the family farm in Spring Hill, Kansas, and were active in 4-H and with the United Methodist Church. As a child, Dorothy kept extensive scrapbooks following Shirley Temple and the Dionne Quints. She proudly displayed her Shirley Temple doll in its original clothing.
In 1952, Dorothy graduated from Baker University with a teaching degree. Her Zeta Tau Alpha sorority sisters nicknamed her "Nifty Nevius". After graduation, she taught Home Economics at Waverly High School and then 3rd Grade at Paola and Olathe. After a short time teaching others, she devoted the rest of her life to taking care of her husband, children and grandchildren.

Wayne Zimmerman and Dorothy married on July 4, 1954. After Wayne's Air Force tour of duty took them to Arizona and Florida, they settled in Olathe. Wayne and Dorothy have three children and 7 grandchildren. Steve, the oldest, is a pilot. He and his wife Susie have 2 children, Sarah (Adam) and Matthew (Tiffanie). Bev, a lawyer with Midwest Trust Company, and her husband Jim own four Nothing Bundt Cake bakeries and have 4 children: Stacy (Robert), Alex, Karen (Tom) and Sam. Rick, a construction manager, and his wife Angela have one daughter, Lindsey and stepson Daniel.

Dorothy played bridge in several clubs and was an excellent seamstress. Using the Singer Featherweight sewing machine her parents gave her as a high-school graduation present, she sewed home décor and clothing for herself, her kids and grandkids. She was a long-time leader of the Ridgeview Rockets 4-H club and an active member of the Bonita Hummers extension group.
