Doris Stevens

December 7, 1933 — November 6, 2015

Doris B. Stevens, 81, of Overland Park, Kan., passed away peacefully Friday, Nov. 6, 2015. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, at Advent Lutheran Church in Olathe, Kan. The family will receive friends following the service.

Doris was born Dec. 7, 1933 in DeKalb, Ill., to Paul and Mary Brooks. She was the second-oldest of five children and grew up on a small farm. After graduating from DeKalb Township High, she attended nursing school before marrying Robert A. Stevens on August 17, 1953 in De Kalb, Ill. The young couple moved to Massachusetts where Robert attended and graduated from Williams College.

Doris was the mother of three children and lived in Massachusetts, Guam and Virginia before settling in Rolling Meadows, Ill. She would later move to Arlington Heights, Ill., Barrington, Ill. and finally, Overland Park, Kan.
As a stay-at-home mother, she raised her three children using her endless supply of creativity, resourcefulness and compassion for others. Whether it was hand-making Halloween costumes or creating games and activities out of the simplest of supplies, there was no limit to her imagination.

Throughout her life, she led her family with a quiet power and determination, and believed it was important to show kindness to all those she encountered. She taught her children to love nature, follow their convictions and never be afraid of a little mud.

After her children had grown, she became a small business owner with her husband, operating the House of Western Fashion in Mount Prospect, Ill., for more than 20 years.

She loved to garden, sew and read a good mystery novel. As an avid animal lover, she was often surrounded by her dogs.

She retired and moved to Overland Park, Kan., where she spent her last years surrounded by family. One of the highlights in her life during her later years was going on weekly four-generation lunches with her daughter, granddaughter and only great-granddaughter, Brynn.

After courageously battling Alzheimer's Disease for nearly a decade, Doris died quietly in the early morning hours on Friday after spending the day with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents Paul and Mary Brooks, her brother Ross Brooks, and her grandson Graham Stevens.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Robert Stevens, her children Kathy Sederstrom (Larry), Jeff Stevens (Brenda) and Craig Stevens; along with grandchildren Kyle Sederstrom (Kristin), Jill Ladage (Aaron), Caroline Stevens, Rosemary Stevens, Jack Stevens, Shane Stevens, Aedon Stevens, Sam Stevens and Jack O. Stevens; great-grandchild Brynn Ladage; brother Howard Brooks (Gloria) and sisters Pauline Byro and Georgia Boyer-Lichthardt (Bob).

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association
