DORIS MAY FALEN, age 87, passed away January 4, 2011 in Overland Park, Kansas. Private family services will be held.
Doris was born July 29, 1923 in Herington, KS to P.H. and Esther Knuth. She graduated from Herington High School in 1940 and went on to attend Kansas State University and University of Southern California. Doris was employed as a secretary for the Corps of Engineers in Herington, Liberal, and Salina, KS, and also as a legal secretary, but primarily enjoyed her role as a homemaker and mother.
Doris married John H. Falen on November 5, 1947 in Herington, KS and farmed seven miles east of Herington in Delavan, KS for over 46 years. After retiring, John and Doris traveled for several years, and settled in Phoenix, AZ for ten years. In 2009, they moved to Overland Park, KS.
Doris was an accomplished musician with a beautiful soprano voice, sharing her talents to many weddings and funerals over the years. She enjoyed playing piano for the music productions while her children were in school.
She was particularly proud of her 50 year membership with the P.E.O. Chapter F.C. in Herington, KS.
John and Doris were long-time members of the Herington United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband John, of 63 years, her sons Mark (Kathy) Falen of Olathe, KS, and Dana (Vickie) Falen of Scottsdale, AZ, her sister Lenore (Tom) Evans of Seminole, FL, four grandchildren; Kristin Falen, Jonathan Falen, Benjamin Falen, and Jackie Keefe, and five great-grandchildren; Peyton Falen, Lydia Falen, Katelin Falen, Logan Falen, and Landon Keefe. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister, Lucile Cooke. Memorials are suggested to the Kansas Cottey College Scholarship Fund, and may be sent to Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Olathe Chapel, 14275 S Blackbob, Olathe, KS 66062.
