Donald Metz

Donald Shink Metz, pastor, distinguished scholar, author, master teacher and administrator, went to be with the Lord on September 16, 2008. He was born on March 17, 1916, in Scothaven, Pennsylvania to Leon and Ida Metz. In 1939, he married his wife of 68 years, Eva Irene, in Washington D.C.

Upon completing his college education at Eastern Nazarene College, in Boston, MA, Don and Eva, accepted Godʼs call on their lives and spent 12 years serving as Pastors of Nazarene churches in New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Donʼs passion for education led him to accept a position at Bethany Nazarene College (now Southern Nazarene University). He was a professor and also served as Chairman of the Department of Religion. In 1967, the Metzʼs moved to Olathe, Kansas as Don was offered the opportunity to help found MidAmerica Nazarene College (now University). He served as the first Academic Dean (1967-1974, 1976-1983) and as Chairman of the Religion Department.

Over his lifetime, his love and enthusiasm for learning earned him two doctorates, a seminary degree, and a masterʼs degree in American History. He authored several books and taught overseas at the European Nazarene Bible College and the African Nazarene Bible College.

Don faithfully served his community, church, and family throughout his entire lifetime. His life was a model of discipleship and his depth of knowledge of Godʼs Word inspired many. Those who crossed his path were encouraged by his friendship.
He is survived by his son Lynn Metz and wife Sharron of Denver, Colorado; daughter Janet Halvorson and husband Chris of Olathe, Kansas; six grandchildren Shari, Cari, Stephen, Scott, Jon and Amy; ten great grandchildren, Angela, Tessa, Cori, Alli, Janessa, Nick, Anna, Eva, Imogen and Addison; and his Christian family at College Church of the Nazarene. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva I. Metz, his parents, Leon and Ida Metz, his brother, Carl, and his sister Lois, all of Pennsylvania.
