Don J Vail Jr., Age 84, recently of Olathe KS succumbed to complications of a broken hip with his children present on Dec 19,2018
Don was predeceased by his wife Doris. He is survived by his brother Jim (Linda), Daughter Robin (Dave) Rayburn, Son Forrest (Cathy) and grandchildren, Joshua, Laura, Timothy, Benjamin, Amanda, Daniel and great grandchild Nathaniel (Tim's).
Don J (aka Tiny) was born September 4, 1934 to Don J. Vail Sr and Gail Edgington Vail in Harlan Iowa. He grew up in Sheffield Iowa on his family farm and graduated from Sheffield High School. He attended Northeast Missouri Teacher College (Truman University). After serving 2 years in the Army as a helicopter mechanic in the late 1950s he earned his BS in Entomology from The University of Missouri Columbia.
Don J was united in marriage to Doris Mae Huff on May 8, 1958 in Columbia, Mo. They had 2 children Robin and Forrest. They lived in Independence Mo before moving to Grayson GA in 1968. Don served as Grayson city councilman and mayor in the 1970s.
He worked for the FDA from 1965 to 1989 in the area of food safety, writing training manuals for the FDA and teaching other analysts how to identify contaminants in our food.
After retiring from the FDA in 1989 he and Doris moved to Boonville, MO (her hometown) where he opened Food Sanitation Training Service to continue promoting food safety.
To be closer to family, Don and Doris moved to Olathe, KS in 2006. Three months before his death Tiny was still enjoying playing chess, cross-stitching and watching his favorite sports teams including the KC Chiefs the KC Royals and his beloved Mizzou Tigers but lamented no longer being able to bowl or fish.
His dry sense of humor and his kindness will be missed by all who knew him.
Funeral Services will be at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home in Olathe KS on Wednesday, Dec. 26th 2018 with the viewing at 1:00 PM and funeral at 2:00 PM. Graveside services in Boonville MO at 1:00 PM on Thursday Dec 27, 2018.
