Dolores (Dee) Schmidt of Olathe, KS passed away on Saturday, August 7, 2021 surrounded by her husband and family.
Dee was born in 1934 in Madison, SD and spent her childhood on the family farm. She learned to bake and sew at a young age and continued to enjoy those activities throughout her lifetime, sharing many homemade goodies with family, friends and neighbors over the years.
She graduated from General Beadle High School before moving to Sioux Falls to attend college for a year. Soon after, she went to work at International Harvester Company where she met Merle Schmidt. They fell in love and were blessed with a marriage spanning 65 years. Dee was totally devoted to her family and was delighted to be a "stay at home" mom while raising her three children: Pam, Sheri and Steve.
Dee and Merle moved to Olathe, KS in 1980. They joined First Baptist Church where Dee sang in choir and was very active in Women's Ministries. When her youngest started high school, Dee returned to the workforce full-time, taking a job as a legal secretary. She enjoyed working in the law office and made many friends before she retired in 1997.
She welcomed son-in-law, Barry, and daughter-in-law, Jane, into the family with open arms and was thrilled to be Grandma/Mimi to Matt & Taylor, Allie, Lilly and Will. Her love for them and positive impact on their lives cannot be measured and will be treasured forever. Great-granddaughter, Jillian, added even more joy to Dee's life when she arrived in 2019.
After retirement, Dee focused her time on family, friends and volunteerism. She sang with Olathe Inter-Generational Choir for several years and was a long-time volunteer at Olathe Medical Center. She often said and truly believed 'it's all good' and showed all of us what it looked like to live with JOY, putting Jesus first, Others second and Yourself last. We are so very grateful for her godly and selfless example.
Dee is survived by her husband, Merle, her children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter. She also leaves three brothers, cousins, nieces, nephews and countless friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in Dee's memory be made to either First Baptist Church of Olathe, 2024 E. 151st Street, Olathe, KS 66062 or a charity of your choice.
