Derek Stephen Leppert, 40, of Olathe, passed away on September 10, 2020.
He was born on June 17, 1980 to Stephen and Sharin (Humphrey) Leppert in Englewood, NJ.
On September 8, 2012 he married Stacy, and instantly they became a family of four, and made their home in Olathe.
Upon meeting Derek, you would know how much he loved his family, but it would only take a few minutes to realize that baseball was his second love.
Derek's love of baseball started at an early age, he began playing in little league, and continued through his college years. He not only played but would watch the game as often as possible, and would even ride the subway from NJ to catch a Mets game starting as a young teenager. He went to Eastern Nazarene College in Boston, where he played baseball and received his bachelors in psychology. In 2002 he moved to the Kansas City area and began his coaching career at MidAmerica Nazarene University. This was the beginning of his coaching journey which took him to Friends University in Wichita , where he was the Head Baseball Coach for 2 years. He returned to the Kansas City area and decided to focus on high school programs, where he could help develop and mentor young men. He started with Blue Valley Southwest High School, and most recently he coached the Olathe West Owls. During this time he helped lead the Southwest Timberwolves to a state championship in 2015! Derek spent many hours coaching and providing mentorship to countless athletes through his work with the area baseball academies and spent his summers coaching high school summer teams across the Kansas City area. In 2018 he was honored to be selected as a coach for the Kansas City Royals Scout team. In 2019, Derek was named Assistant Coach of the Year for the American Baseball Coaching Association.
When not on the field, he loved to spend time with his family and friends and could be found racing his son Jayden, in Mario Kart. He spent his free time reading or enjoying any type of sports. The teams you could count on him to root for were; the New York Rangers, Notre Dame Football, Duke Basketball, New York Giants football and last but certainly not least the Kansas City Royals.
