Dennis Leroy Ptomey, 81, passed away June 14, 2018 at Indian Creek Nursing Home, Overland Park, Kansas.
Dennis was born in Salem, Oregon February 10, 1937. His parents had gone to Oregon to find work during the Dust Bowl. When his parents came back to Kansas, the family lived on different farms that had available jobs.
The family lived in Highland before moving to Leona, Kansas. Dennis finished school there, then went to Highland Junior College.
Dennis stayed in Kansas, close to the Kansas City area and had various jobs throughout his career. He taught elementary school for several years. After that, he sold insurance. Next, he joined the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in St. Joseph, Missouri. He also worked for Crouch Brothers Trucking making deliveries. He was a baker at the Wonder Bread bakery. Going back to trucking, he drove for Schwerman Trucking, delivering bulk cement. Driving the truck led him to his final employer, Heartland Cement in Gardner. He was the Terminal Manager there until his retirement.
After retirement, he moved to Baldwin City then back to Gardner. His health started failing and unfortunately, spent the rest of his life in health care facilities.
Dennis is survived by his son Derrek, Overland Park; brother Thomas and wife Linda, Shawnee; sister Retta and husband Ray Puvogel, Hiawatha; sister Delora Tobey, Austin, TX; and many nieces and nephews.
