Denise Scott, 52 of Olathe, was called to be with the Lord, Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at her home. She bravely battled breast cancer since June of 2002 with tremendous grace and strength and will suffer no longer.
She was born June 2, 1955 in Grainfield, Kansas, the daughter of Walter and Mary Ellen "Nell" Grant Hein. She was a graduate of Wheatland High School in 1973, later received a bachelor's in education from Fort Hays State University in 1977. She received her master's degree in education from the University of Kansas 1985.
Denise taught special education in the Shawnee Mission and Olathe School districts for a total of 21 years. During her employment she was proud to be able to take leave from teaching and raise her children.
She was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority at FHSU. She was involved in Special Olympics through Johnson County ARC.
Denise married Gary Rex Scott on August 15, 1980, in Shawnee, Kansas. As part of their honeymoon they hitchhiked for four and a half months in Australia and New Zealand. He survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Jessica R. Holthaus and her husband, Jeremiah of Overland Park, and Katelynn M. Scott of Olathe; and a son Drew S.D. Scott of Olathe; her parents; her father-in-law, Rex Scott; seven sisters, Kate Schmidtberger, Judy Ranson, Jeanne Wilkins, Cindy McMillin, Tammy Archer, Rene' Johnson, and Missy Bradfield; five brothers, Rick, Terry, Steve, Dave, and Mark Hein, numerous other relatives, as well as her dog, Jack. She was preceded in death by her grandparents and mother-in-law, Wyona Scott.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30 a.m., Saturday, February 9, 2008 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Olathe. A rosary will be conducted at 7:30 p.m., Friday at the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home in Olathe. The family will receive friends following the rosary. Interment will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Olathe. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation or to the Special Olympics.
