David Allan Phillippi passed away October 15, 2006 in his home surrounded by family, his greatest love. Dave was born November 12, 1936 to Joel and Frances Hussey Phillippi. He grew up in Bronson, Kansas and attended Ottawa University on a football scholarship. He graduated from Pittsburg State University with biology and teaching degrees, then earned his Master of Science Degree from Oklahoma State University on a National Science Foundation Grant. Dave taught science and coached sports for 28 years. After retiring from public education, he worked for the federal EPA for twenty years, retiring in June, 2004.
Dave is survived by his wife of 49 years, Joyce Nelson Phillippi, formerly of Pomona, Kansas, daughter Teresa Mallare and husband Ron of Leawood, KS, son Jeff Phillippi and wife Denise of Olathe, Kansas, and six wonderful grandchildren, Megan, Alexandra and Nicholas Mallare and Caleb, Logan and Jacob Phillippi, brother Sam Phillippi of Mesquite, TX, sister Virginia Aubert of LaHarpe, KS, brother-in-laws Ralph and Bernard Nelson of Kansas City and many nieces and nephews.
Dave lived what he said he believed – the true measure of any man. He displayed personal courage and inner conviction to always act honorably. May the lives he touched be a testament to that effort he put forth.
