Dale M. Curtin

April 23, 1930 — January 4, 2019

Dale Martin Curtin of Overland Park, KS, passed away unexpectedly January 4, 2019. The son of TL and Darlene Curtin, he was 88. Visitation will be from 5-7 on Wed., Jan 9, at Penwell-Gabel, Olathe, KS. A Prayer Service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Thur., Jan 10, at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, Olathe, KS. Private family burial will follow. Dale was predeceased by his loving wife Barbara of 63 years. Her passing almost two years ago broke his heart. They have three children: Ginny Curtin of Overland Park; Michael Curtin of Portland, OR, and partner Al Glowasky; and Nancy and Steve Fuller of Olathe, with grandchildren Lauren Fuller and James Fuller along with extended family.

He valued his family, service to others and a strong work ethic.

Dale worked hard. He put himself through school at the University of Illinois with his future bride as his boss at the Daily Illini. After graduating with an officer appointment through ROTC, they married and drove to AZ so Dale could start flight school in the USAF. Years later he would be so proud to be recognized as a veteran with a hand-made quilt.

From driving the family-packed station wagon cross-country on vacation to sitting through endless band concerts and coaching not- so- talented ball players long after they should have retired, Dale was there. He did this after leaving early and arriving home late from work or on the weekend when R&R would have been preferred. Somehow, he did seem to play golf quite a bit too! The more he complained, it seemed the more he wanted to play.

Dale caught the travel bug bad from Barb. As the kids moved out, the accommodations got nicer and the locales more exotic. Having grown up in a small town and then gone in-state to college, Dale quickly acquired Barb's love of new places, people and cuisine.

Not one to sit around after retirement, Dale volunteered in the community. Volunteerism and community service started early as a loaned executive for the United Way of Chicago. He loved working with various local groups like Johnson County Public Library, Harvesters Food Bank, The Lion's Club and the Kansas City Sea Sprites.
