Obituary for D. Dean Askeland
August 23, 1933-June 26, 2019

On a beautiful summer afternoon, we said goodbye to our dear father and friend Dean. One of the finest men we've ever known believed in living simply but loving deeply and spent every day helping others and making the world a better, kinder place.

Dean grew up on an Iowa farm and graduated from high school in Lake Mills, Iowa. He served as a guided missile specialist in the U.S. Army, followed by attending college at Florida State University and Michigan State University. Dean was a social worker by profession and spent most of his working life in a variety of direct contact and administrative positions involving disadvantaged youth.

He is survived by his children; daughter, Kathryn Askeland of Lenexa, KS; son, Paul and daughter-in-law Chris Askeland of Lee's Summit, MO; grandchildren; Andrew Lasater and Braden Askeland; and ex-wife and best friend, Jan Askeland of Olathe, KS. Dean also sponsored three children through the Christian Children's Fund: Seynabov Sall, Sayethiam and Siga Senghor, all of Senegal.

In a note to his family, Dean specifically requested no service or funeral. We wish to honor his request and instead will conduct a private dedication to celebrate his life on his birthday by scattering his ashes along his favorite bike trail, followed by a family pizza and wine party (again his request…"pepperoni and sausage for me, please!").

Dean was a humble man with a great sense of humor and held a deep dedication to contributing to the advancement of multiple social and humanitarian causes. He was committed to paying it forward and dedicated every day to helping those less fortunate in an effort to make this world a better place. His greatest honor would be for those who wish to memorialize him to follow his philosophy and continue to perform act(s) of kindness for your fellow man. If you would like to make a donation, he has requested you please consider Doctors Without Borders or the charity of your choice.
