Claude William Heflin

Claude William Heflin, 93, of Olathe, Kansas, departed this life on Christmas day, December 25, 2016, at the Olathe Hospital.

He was born December 1, 1923, to parents Gutherie Claude and Margarite Heflin of Kansas City, Missouri. They lived at 23rd and Bales in Kansas City, Missouri, for 29 years.

He graduated from Central High School in 1941 and went to work for the Donnelly Garmet Company in Kansas City, Missouri. He served in WWII with the 8th & 9th Air Force Division in Europe from 1943 to 1946. He earned an Honorary Discharge in 1946 and returned home and went to work for the United States Post Office shortly afterward.

Claude married in 1952 and built a home in Kansas City North, Missouri. He had a daughter, Claudine, July 27, 1953. He later divorced in 1957.

He married Ella Marie Zehr in 1958 and had a son, Scott in 1962. He lived in Kansas City North until he moved to Olathe, Kansas, in 1976 where he built a new home in Olathe.

Claude worked for the post office as clerk, foreman and was awarded Superintendent in the new post office in Gladstone, Missouri, in 1961. He then was assigned to a larger post office as Superintendent of North Kansas City, Missouri. While there he was assigned Acting Postmaster of Independence, Missouri, until a new postmaster was assigned. He returned to the North Kansas City Branch and in 1976 was promoted to Postmaster of Olathe, Kansas.

After 37 years of creditable service in the Air Force and United States Post Office, he took early retirement in 1980.

Claude started a second career as personnel manager of an electronics firm in Overland Park, Kansas. Next, he was personnel manager of a building materials warehouse in Olathe, Kansas. And finally, he became a court bailiff for Overland Park, Kansas. He then took total retirement in 1993 after his 70th birthday.

Claude was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Marie, his parents and one brother, Edward L. Heflin.

He is survived by his son Scott, his daughter Claudine Mesecher (Robert) of DesMoines, Iowa and her two sons Chris Duzenberry (Terry) and Nathan Duzenberry, five great grandchildren and also, his buddy and companion, a golden retriever named Heidi.

Claude was a good provider, a loving husband and father. He was kind hearted and was well liked by everyone.

He will be sadly missed by family and all who knew him.

The family will receive friends for a visitation at 1:00pm on Thursday, December, 29, 2016, at Penwell Gabel's Olathe Chapel, with the funeral service following at 2:00pm. Burial will take place at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens in Olathe.
