She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Dr. Henry Smits with whom she was married for 52 years.

Clarssia moved with her parents to Atlanta, Georgia when she was two years old. Her parents were members of the Church of the Nazarene and made sure that all the children attended all services. Clarssia became a Christian at age 6. Later in her early teens, she became sanctified and began her life of total commitment to God's will and leadership.

As a young woman, she lived in Atlanta for many years, working at Drennan and Brannon Law Firm while attending college.

While attending college, she met Henry Smits from Berkeley California. This courtship was a long distance, letter courtship which resulted in a marriage that lasted 52 years! Henry and Clarssia moved to Berkeley California and lived for there for 3 years. After Henry finished his assignment in the Navy, the couple moved to various cities to attend Emory University, University of Kansas, University of Missouri, and Nazarene Theological Seminary. Henry completed degrees at all the academic institutions and began his teaching career. Clarssia served in the legal profession, university technical education, church administration, leader in NYPS, NWMS, and a Sunday School teacher of 3 year old children, which she dearly loved!

She served on the church board, Sunday School board, and District Director of Christian Lay Training. Henry and Clarssia served together in the Church of the Nazarene in some capacity for their 52 years of marriage. Together they served God and His church for a total of 142 years!
