Charlie L. Yourdon passed away on Monday, August 22, 2011.
Born September 23, 1938 in Ontario, Oregon, Charlie grew up on a farm near Payette, Idaho, where he graduated from high school in 1956. He received his first local preacher's license and preached his first sermon in June of 1956 in his home church. He graduated from Northwest Nazarene College in 1960 and Nazarene Theological Seminary in 1963.
Charlie accepted his first pastorate at Bonner Springs (KS) Church of the Nazarene in June of 1963, followed by his marriage to Sharon Weldy in September of the same year. They served faithfully together in ministry as Charlie pastored churches in Kansas, Texas and Missouri over the next 38 years. In 1994, Charlie and Sharon moved to Kansas City, where he was employed at the Church of the Nazarene Headquarters and Nazarene Publishing House for a total of 14 years, retiring in 2009. During this time he served on the editorial staff of Adult Ministries and was editor of the Sunday School publication, Standard.
Upon his retirement, Charlie began part-time employment at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home in Olathe, Kansas, where he worked until shortly before his death. He was an active member of Central Church of the Nazarene in Lenexa, Kansas and fulfilled one of his lifelong dreams by participating in a Work-and-Witness trip to Nicaragua in December 2010.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie Edward Yourdon and Frances Yourdon, a brother, Maurice Yourdon, and a sister, Shirley Conrad.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon, of 48 years, children Lanette Strickland (Mark), Charles (Melanie) Yourdon and John Yourdon, and grandchildren Caleb, Emma and Claire Yourdon and McKayla and Madisen Strickland. Also surviving are sisters-in-law Inis (Harold) Hebbe, Elaine Coy, and Eunice Wheeler, as well as many nieces and nephews.
