Charles C. Tompkins

January 24, 1931 — January 7, 2021

Charles Clifford Tompkins, 89, of Olathe, Kansas passed away Thursday January 7, 2021 at Olathe Medical Center. A celebration of his life will be scheduled for a later date. Please check back.

Charlie was born January 24, 1931 in Los Angeles, California to Cary and Bernita Tompkins. He graduated from Northeast High School in Kansas City, MO in 1949 before joining the United States Navy and being honorably discharged in April 1955. He married Joan F. Allen on 11 Jun 1955 and lived in Salina, KS for 52 years before moving to Olathe to be closer to family. He spent the majority of his working career as a traveling salesman for over 40 years for Gerber Products. Charlie enjoyed hunting until he broke his arm, enjoyed fishing and you could always find one or two fishing poles in the trunk of his car. He would often finish his sales route early while on the road so that he could find a local fishing hole. He would spend hours catching and releasing. He was also active in the ISIS Shrine in Salina, KS as a member of the Director's Staff. Charlie also enjoyed being a clown for the Shrine Circus. He was instrumental in helping standup the International Order of DeMolay Masonic Chapter in Salina KS.

He was a people person and never met someone he couldn't have hours long conversation with. If you ever wanted to find Charlie, all you needed to do was to look at a local grocery store and you would find him prowling the aisles talking to folks and often straightening the shelves, even for non-Gerber sections. He was also a jokester, and no one was safe from his antics. He kept the family laughing with his tickles and his funny faces.
He was preceded in death by his parents Cary Tompkins and Bernita Collins, his wife's parent (who were like parents to him), Richard and Mary Francis (Faffy) Allen, his brother Cary Tompkins, Sr, a grandson, Jarod Tompkins

He is survived by his wife of 65 years Joan Tompkins and their children Kimberly Tompkins-Coit(Thomas) of Olathe, KS, Clifford Tompkins(Barbie) of Huntingtown, MD, Kie Tompkins(Deedra) of Kansas City, KS, and 7 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and their spouses and two sisters Jeanie Mays and Linda Erickson of Boise, Idaho. And several nieces and nephews.

No donations are requested.
