Charles Don Coones, 86 of Olathe, KS, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2021. A visitation to celebrate his life will be held on May 19, 2021 from 6:00-8:00 P.M. at Penwell-Gabel funeral home in Olathe, KS.
Don was born March 15, 1935 in Kansas City, MO to Charles & Marjorie Coones. His life was dedicated to his wife, Sumi, and his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Don was an amazing husband, father, and grandfather. He always had an incredibly strong work ethic, as was displayed during his 32 years at TWA, as a mechanic, where he retired. Prior to working at TWA, he spent time in the Air Force where he learned to work on planes. He received an honorable discharge from the Air Force as a Staff Sergeant on January 27, 1958, as a testament to his honest and faithful service. Honest and faithful could sum up Don's entire life. He was honest and faithful to his family, friends, and colleagues at work.
While in the Air Force, Don married the love of his life, Sumi. They were married on December 31, 1957 in Okinawa, Japan and celebrated 61 beautiful years of marriage. Their love produced four children, 10 grandchildren & 2 great grandchildren.
Don enjoyed woodworking, working on cars, and fixing just about anything. He was the greatest handyman/mechanic we had ever seen. He had a unique ability to figure things out and get them working again. During the early years of the family, he enjoyed camping, boating, fishing, and hunting. He would take the family out camping nearly every weekend of the summer, even while working two jobs to support the family. He was happiest when he was surrounded by his family and in his final days of his life, they were all there by his side. This was a testament to the love and dedication he had for his family and for the love and dedication they had for him.
He was proceeded in his death by his parents, his wife, Sumi, grandson, Jared Coones, and daughter in-law, Jayne Coones.
He is survived by his 4 children, Tom and Annette Coones, Mike and Debra Coones, Judy Porting, Carol and Tom Brewer. 9 grandchildren, Matthew Oskvig, Meghan and Stephen Cook, Bryan Porting, Stephen Oskvig, Logan Coones, Daniel Oskvig, Adam and Mickey Oskvig, Maddison Coones, and John Coones. 2 great grandchildren, Raelynn and Rylee Cook.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to the Jared Coones Memorial Foundation in Don's Name. Donations can be sent to P.O. Box 3314 Olathe, KS 66063-3314.
