CHARLES "CHICK" ATWELL, CFP
Charles McHugh Atwell, 78, of Leawood, died Saturday, December 16, 2017 at Kansas City Hospice House. Strokes and other problems had kept him wheelchair-bound at Villa St. Joseph the previous two years.
He preferred to be known as "Chick", although he was known as Charlie Atwell in business, while he worked in the corporate office and in sales at Waddell & Reed for 30 yrs, and then with clients at ING. In retirement, he gained a Certification in Gerontology to help others.
Chick was a great volunteer. He served in various offices in Leawood Lions Club, with Boy Scouts, American Cancer Society, the Boys and Girls Club and was active in Knights of Columbus/ Men of Nativity (he was part of the small group known as "Men of McDonalds" for their daily after-mass meeting-place). He volunteered for several clinical studies at KU's Alzheimer's Disease Center and proudly donated his brain for autopsy. He was always "on the go".
Chick boated for years at area lakes. He loved to snow ski in Colorado, often with the KC Ski Club.
He was born in Washington, D.C. and Chick was forever grateful to "Uncle" Evan Scholl, Washington, D.C., who became benefactor and supporter to him and his brother, Mike, throughout their high school years.
While studying at Georgetown University, Chick was drafted into the Navy and posted to Scotland, where he met his future wife and made friendships that still endure.
Chick is survived by his wife Pam, their son Scott, their daughter Monica (Derold) Fletcher, six grandchildren: Amanda, Courtney and Jackson Atwell and Alyssa, Miya and Krysta Fletcher. Survivors also include his sister, Pamela (Frank) Mondell and sister-in-law, Judy Atwell.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 13, 2018 at the Church of the Nativity, West 119 Street, Leawood, KS. Visitation 10 am, Celebration of Life 11 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to a charity of your choice.
