C.E. "Corky" Hobbs, 87, Overland Park, passed away August 22, 2010. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 25th, from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 14275 S. Blackbob Road, Olathe, KS with memorial service beginning at 7:00 pm.
Corky was born July 5, 1923 in Kansas City, Kansas to Lawrence and Winifred Hobbs. He graduated from Wyandotte High School, Kansas City, Kansas, in 1941.
Corky served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from September 3, 1941 until November 1, 1945. He was in the Philippines as a Patrol Torpedo (PT) Boat Repairman. He had the rank of Shipfitter First Class. Some of his medals included:

(2) Philippine Liberation Ribbon
(3) European-African Area Ribbon
(4) American Defense Ribbon
(5) American Area Ribbon
(6) Good Conduct Ribbon
After his discharge from the Navy, Corky went to work for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. His father, Lawrence Hobbs, helped him begin a long career in the transportation industry. He started his career with one of several railroads he worked for. Among his many stories included the fact that at one time he had 40 passes on different railroads. The railroad experience lead to a lengthy career in the trucking industry. He made sure to let everyone know he did not ever drive a truck during his career. He made a name for himself as a sales representative and rose to Regional Director and Vice President of Sales for several trucking companies.
Corky was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Hobbs and his mother Winifred O. Hobbs. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Linda J. Hobbs; 2 daughters, Jeanne Murray of Houston, Texas and Trish Thomas of Raymore, Missouri; 3 sons, Larry Hobbs of Dallas, Texas, Randy Hobbs of Shawnee, Kansas, and David (wife Elizabeth) Hobbs of Temperance, Michigan; and a step daughter Rachel (husband Joseph) Bachand of Cocoa, Florida; 11 grandchildren, Kate Graham, Allison (Landon) Thompson, Kyle (Jamee) Hobbs, Zach Thomas, Natalie Thomas, Andrew Hobbs, Adam Hobbs, Matthew Hobbs, Sarah Hobbs, Luke Bachand, and Lilly Bachand; and 7 great grandchildren. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Bernadine Daniels.
Corky was a proud member of Alcoholics Anonymous with 32 years of continuous sobriety. He was a revered member of the NEJC AA Fellowship. He will be missed by hundreds of members he has helped over the years.
Corky joined other World War II veterans on an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. on September 30, 2009. The highlight of the trip was a visit to the World War II Memorial. Many World War II Veterans would not have the opportunity to visit this memorial if it were not for the Honor Flight. This trip was one of the highlights of Corky's life.
