Carolyn Rae Wollen

August 17, 1932 — July 6, 2017

"When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure."
Author Unknown, from a piece of paper taped to Sally Wollen's desk

Carolyn Rae "Sally" Wollen (August 17, 1932 – July 6, 2017) valued words. She saved quotes that spoke to her. She took time in choosing the cards she sent because people mattered. She believed the best hours of her day were spent with a book. She could swear, but she chose not to since, as a former high school debater, she found there was power in articulating an idea. She always asked the best of herself and raised her daughters to do the same.

Sally and her husband the late Dr. Marvin Wollen were part of the group of Olatheans who took pride in serving their community. She used her talent as a florist to help decorate for the early Yuletide Balls to benefit the hospital and her arrangements graced many church altars. She was a member of the Jaycee Janes and the Junior Service League. She also worked in her husband's optometry practice and was active in the Women's Auxiliary of the Kansas Optometric Association.

July 6, 2017, her body could not keep up with her independent spirit. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her family. She was eighty-four.
?Another taped quote on her desk came from one of her many favorite romance novelists, Ruth Langan, "Not what you have in your life but who you have that counts." She is survived by her daughters, Cathy Maxwell, Teresa Wilke, and Tammi Watkins; her son-in-law Darryll Watkins; her grandchildren Andrew Maxwell (Holly), Chelsea MacDonald (Carlos), Samantha Leon, Ally Wilke, Ashley Watkins (Scott), and Parker Watkins (Laketa); and her great-grandchildren, Trinity, Zavier, Hadley, and Parker. She is preceded in death by her husband and her daughter Cynthia Wollen.
