Carol Ann Whelan

Carol Ann (King) Whelan, 89, Overland Park, Kansas passed away March 11, 2025. A graveside service will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery, 3616 SW 6th Ave., Topeka, KS on Friday, March 14th at 11:00 am.

Carol was a 1953 graduate of Topeka High School and continued her education at the University of Kansas earning a B.S. degree in Nursing in 1957 and a Master of Science in Education in 1982. She retired from the Shawnee Mission School District in 1996 where she was the nurse at Nallwood Junior High and Indian Woods Middle School for 20 years. Prior to that she taught at Shawnee Mission East High School, worked as a pediatric office nurse, public health nurse and taught at the University of Kansas Medical Center. After retirement she was active in several golf leagues, loved to play bridge and volunteered many years at Stanley Elementary School. She was a member of the Village Presbyterian Church.

Carol was born December 24, 1935 in Kansas City, Missouri but lived in Topeka until 1957. She married Richard James Whelan in Topeka on November 21, 1959. They were married for 55 years. In 1962 they moved to Prairie Village, Kansas where they resided until moving to Overland Park in 2000.

Her husband passed away in 2015. She is survived by her son Mark Richard Whelan and wife Virginia, daughter Cheryl Lynne (Whelan) Fox and husband Craig of Topeka, Kansas. Also surviving are two grandsons, Ian Richard and Logan Joseph Whelan and several nieces and nephews.
