Carl Eugene Clayton, age 46, passed away at the Olathe Health Hospice House in Olathe, Kansas on March 23, 2021, following a long illness.
Carl was born on August 26, 1974, at Andrews Airforce Base in Prince George's County Maryland, to Larry and Linda Clayton. He moved to Lawrence, Kansas with his parents as a young child. In 1980, Carl began receiving services from the Kansas Neurological Institute (KNI) in Topeka, Kansas and attending school at the Special Purpose School on the KNI campus.
Carl moved to Lawrence, Kansas in 1996 and began receiving services from Cottonwood, Inc. Carl was employed as a Production Worker, and participated in the Life Enrichment and Residential Services programs at Cottonwood. Carl had close long-term relationships with many of the staff members and people supported at Cottonwood, and was known and loved for his beautiful smile, engaging personality, sense of humor, love of fun and persistence in making his preferences known and in doing the things that were important to him.
Carl is survived by his parents, Larry Clayton of Lawton, Oklahoma and Linda Clayton of Kansas City, Missouri, and his grandmother, Doris Clayton of Lawton, Oklahoma. Other survivors include his brothers Christopher Clayton (Martha Armstrong) and William Clayton, his sister Alexandra (Neil) Niederhauser, nephews Peyton and Ethan Neiderhauser, Aunt Gerri-Ann (Ron) Hopkins, and guardian Barney Hubert.
Carl and his family are very appreciative of the support provided to Carl for many years by the staff at the Kansas Neurological Institute and Cottonwood, Inc., and for the compassionate care provided to Carl by the staff at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Select Specialty Hospital of Kansas City and Olathe Health Hospice House.
A private memorial service for family and staff and friends from Cottonwood, Inc. will be held for Carl at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home in Olathe at 10 AM on Friday, April 9, followed by open visitation from 11 AM until 1 PM that day. Masks and social distancing will be required. An additional memorial service and will take place at Cottonwood, Inc. in Lawrence when a larger gathering is possible.
