Candis Love Young Lochmann, 64, of Kansas City, MO passed away unexpectedly on June 22, 2023 at St. Luke's Hospital.
She was born on March 4, 1959 to Rev. Dr. C. Davis and Edith (Hawkins) Young in Aberdeen, MS. As the daughter of a pastor and a Christian educator, she was a woman of faith from birth and throughout her life. Candis adored her baby sister Kimby. The family moved to Memphis in 1966 where Candis graduated high school in 1977. She was a 1981 graduate of Drury College where she received a B.A. Summa Cum Laude in English and was Salutatorian. She was a 1984 graduate of University of Missouri School of Law, where she earned her J.D. and was a member of the law review and the Order of the Coif. Before starting a 37-year career as an attorney-at-law in private practice, she was a judicial clerk for U.S. District Court Judge Oliver.
On January 3, 1987, she married the love of her life, Mike W. Lochmann, and they made their home in Kansas City, MO. They were members of Ward Parkway Presbyterian Church, where Candis was active for nearly 40 years as an elder, choir member, teacher and sound engineer for the AV team.
Her son Bryce was born on April 1, 1990. Candis was a devoted and involved mother, supporting him in school, sports (soccer, basketball and football), and every possible activity. She was active in Boy Scout Troop 50 and immensely proud when Bryce became an Eagle Scout. Candis was thrilled to welcome Bryce's wife, Jessica C. Jones, into the family on November 5, 2022.
Growing up in Mississippi and Tennessee in the 1960's and 70's, Candis developed a profound sense of justice and a passion for helping people. Her first grade class was the first integrated class in Mississippi. In high school she became known as a peacemaker and conflict manager during turbulent race relations. She valued and honored people, offering respect and kindness, while calling everyone to be the best that they could be. She offered grace at the same time expecting accountability. Her integrity was obvious to everyone. Her strong faith and convictions of what is right were essential to her core. Her humor and quick wit helped to pave the way to reconciliation, not only in her career but in all areas of her life. During most of her career, Candis was a plaintiff's personal injury attorney fighting for the rights of her injured clients. In 2001, she won a $3.76 million jury verdict for her client, the 11th largest verdict in Missouri that year.
Candis, Mike and Bryce loved to travel. Candis visited more than 60 countries, all 7 continents and every ocean on the planet. Highlights of her adventures included Machu Picchu, Angkor Wat, Petra, the Pyramids, Chichen Itza, the Great Wall of China and climbing the Sydney Harbor Bridge! Her favorite vacations were her African safari, a cruise of the Galapagos Islands and her expedition cruise to Antarctica earlier this year.
Candis was a rabid Kansas City Chiefs fan and season ticket holder for thirty-plus years. She was an accomplished tailgater and found much joy in sharing that experience with her family and friends. The last KC Chiefs game she watched with her family was the win in Super Bowl LVII. Candis also loved live theater. Candis and Mike were longtime season ticket holders at Broadway Across America and the Kansas City Repertory Theatre. They saw every KC Rep production from 1986 through 2023!
Candis enjoyed being with her husband and family on wonderful adventures and holiday gatherings. She experienced true joy with her loved ones. Candis' home was always open and host to countless parties, holiday celebrations, charitable events and conversations with all generations, including dozens of Bryce's friends. Her quiet way of listening, counseling, consoling, leading and loving touched many lives.
Candis is survived by her loving husband, Mike, son Bryce and his wife Jessica, her sister, Rev. Kimby Young, and an extensive network of loving family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.
