Byron Mitchell Jr passed away peacefully Tuesday December 3rd at Overland Park Regional Hospital at the age of 83. Jr grew up in Wellsville KS and graduated from Wellsville High in 1959. He served in the Army stationed in Korea as a tank repair specialist. After serving in the army, Jr went to work at Fairbanks Morse Pump as a machinist. He worked there for 40 plus years before retiring.
After retirement, Jr enjoyed spending more time doing the things he loved. He was an avid bowler, having bowled in several leagues and tournaments throughout his life where he accomplished one perfect game and one 299 game. If he wasn’t bowling, he was typically out fishing. He enjoyed many weeknights at Hillsdale Lake trying to catch that one perfect trophy sized fish. Outside of bowling and fishing, his passions included the Kansas City Chiefs, KU basketball, and the Kansas City Royals.
Jr knew no stranger; he had a knack for making friends wherever he went. He made you feel like you had been friends for a lifetime. Jr greeted everyone with a smile and usually a joke, though some may have been inappropriate- they were sure to make you laugh.
He leaves behind his loving wife Betty of 59 years. He is survived by his sons: David (Johna) Mitchell, Michael (Courtney) Mitchell. 6 grandchildren: Morgan, Mackenzie, Chance, Mason, Damien, and Kailyn. Along with two great grandchildren: Hudson and Henry.
