Bill (William) Altwies, 83, died March 19, 2015 at Hospice House of Olathe Medical Center. He was a resident of Olathe, Kansas since 1973.
Bill was born August 10, 1931 in Wood County, Ohio and grew up in the small town of Grand Rapids, Ohio, along the Maumee River near Toledo. He left high school before graduating to join the U.S. Army and served as an artillery radio operator from 1948 until 1951. He later earned a GED to complete his high school education.
Bill married Ruth M. Shininger on August 7, 1954 in Defiance County, Ohio. Bill and Ruth had five children before the family moved to Cleburne, Texas in 1963.
Bill attended college as an adult, first at the University of Texas at Arlington, and later at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas, where he earned an associate's degree in business.
Bill had several different occupations during his lifetime. After his military service, he operated his own television repair business. He then worked for Johns Manville Corp. for 15 years manufacturing fiberglass insulation. In 1968 he began working as a manager for Venetian Marble Co. manufacturing marble lavatories and bathtubs. His final employer was the Olathe Unified Schools, where he worked on the maintenance staff and as a courier for the district.
During Bill's later years, he dealt with a series of major health problems which he faced with quiet courage and grace. He enjoyed being with his family, woodworking, eating good food, and watching classic movies on television. Bill was a man of extraordinary patience and good humor.
He was predeceased by his father, William John Altwies; his mother, Elvira Mary (Zahn) Altwies; and his sisters: Mary Louise Hoffman, Wilma Weaver, Dorothy Bentley, Irma Jean Hosanna, and Joan Adams. He is survived by his wife Ruth; his children: Darlene Oliver (Larry), Jeffery Altwies (Sara), John Altwies (Julie), Linda Freeman (Bill), and Sharon Altwies Ramsdell (Jeff); and his brother, Eugene "Butch" Altwies; in addition to 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held at Divine Mercy Parish, 555 W. Main St., Gardner, Kansas, at 9:30 am Tuesday, March 24. A memorial mass will follow at 10:30.
