Betty Lorraine (Duffield) Spencer, 79, Olathe, Kansas, passed away at the Good Samaritan Nursing Center on Monday, January 21, 2008. Betty was born October 23, 1928, in Ocheltree, Kansas. She was the fifth of nine children born to Guy Raymond and Bessie (Ledom) Duffield. Betty loved growing up in a big family and held many fond memories of this time with her brothers and sisters. Betty was raised in the Ocheltree and Olathe area. On April 23, 1946, at the age of 17, Betty married her sweetheart, Raymond Rueben Spencer. A tiny baby joined this union on December 2, 1946. Robert Eugene Spencer was born prematurely and passed away two days later. Betty and Ray were blessed with a second son, Donald Ray Spencer, on July 5, 1956. Betty filled her time with the people she loved - being a loving and caring wife, mother, sister, friend, and grandmother. Betty loved flowers and flower gardening. She enjoyed collecting antique furniture and dishes, and "Betty Boop" memorabilia. For several years, Betty attended Ocheltree Baptist Church and Stanley Baptist Temple. Betty and Ray celebrated 61 years of marriage in April of 2007. Betty's most prized possessions were the members of her family, especially her grandchildren. Betty will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; son Robert; sister Dorothy Hawkins Spruytte; and brothers Leo Clifton Duffield and John Duffield. She is survived by her husband, Ray, of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Don and Cathy Spencer, grandson, Jeff Spencer and his fiancé, Jamie Godin, and granddaughter, Catie Spencer, all of Stanley, Kansas; sisters Margaret Surber and Alice Hartley, Olathe; brothers Calvin (Margaret) Duffield, Spring Hill, KS; Clarence (Delores) Duffield, Rocky Comfort, Missouri; Art (Marie) Duffield, Olathe; sisters-in-law, Bea Duffield and Margaret Wallace, Olathe, and Carole Duffield, Mesa, AZ; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation Friday, January 25, 6-8 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 14275 S. Blackbob Rd., Olathe, KS followed by funeral services Saturday, January 26, at 10:30 a.m. Interment: Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Good Samaritan Nursing Center.
