Bette Mahaffie

Bette Jane Mahaffie, born March 30, 1924, in Kansas City, Missouri, died July 11, 2006 at the Olathe Medical Center. A visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 14 at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 14275 S. Blackbob Road, Olathe, KS., with the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 15, 2006 at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 900 S. Honeysuckle, Olathe, KS. Burial to follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa, KS.
Bette was the daughter of Lee and Anna Cumley of Olathe. She graduated from Olathe High School in 1942. During World War II, Bette served her country at the Sunflower Ordnance Plant, driving a munitions truck. She was a Past President of the St. Paul's Catholic Church Altar Society and was Secretary of the Olathe USO. She was the chief auto license clerk at the Johnson County Courthouse for several years before joining Patrons Mutual Insurance Company in Olathe as an underwriter for 24 years. Bette moved to Texas in 1976, where she worked as an underwriter for Republic National Life Insurance. She retired and returned to Olathe in 1984 where she resided at Good Samaritan Towers until her death.
Bette is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Harry "Red" Cumley, and two sisters, Margaret Sheafer and Shirley "Shug" Hutton.
She is survived by her daughter, Cindi Rigdon, son-in-law, Lewis Rigdon, both of Plano, TX; grandchildren Jacob (Sara) Rigdon, Wausau, WI; Joanna Rigdon, Santa Rosa Beach, FL; great-grand-daughter, Gracie Rigdon, sisters Della (Bob) Toplikar, Gardner, KS; and Joanne (Ray) Smith, Olathe, KS; 38 nieces and nephews; and numerous friends at Good Samaritan Towers.
Bette's family would like to express their thanks to Dennis and Christi at the Olathe Medical Center CCU and to her loving doctor, Kathy Chartrand, and her dearest friend, Rosemary Pierron.
