BENJAMIN SCOTT AVERY
"Benjie" was born September 15, 1962 in Houston, TX. His family moved to Porter, TX in 1977 where he attended school in New Caney, TX and graduated in 1981 from New Caney High School. That same year he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.
Benjie loved sports and was an athlete most of his life before falling ill. He played football and baseball in high school and with friends, and was a big surprise on the basketball court as well.
After his service he worked in the Houston area in the fields of construction and insurance sales before moving to Florida where he met and married Judy Bagwell with her daughter Cheri, and they had their daughter Samantha and only son Joel.
In 1998, Benjie and his family moved to Fort Scott, KS where he entered truck driving school and for a short while, was a pastor of a church there. In 2000, he and his family moved to Altamont, KS where Cheri graduated from high school in 2004. Then the family moved to Harrisonville, MO where Joel graduated high school in 2008. Benjie married Irene Jones the same year, and they soon welcomed Hazel Avery.
In March 2017, Benjie married Kimberly Keith in Bellaire, TX. That summer they moved to the Texas Hill Country in the City of Bandera. Shortly after, his father, Harry Avery, moved nearby and soon after settled in Kerrville, TX with the help of his sons. That year marked a turning point for Benjie, newly married, and a special time he and his father grew closer.
In June 2018, Benjie and Kim started a fundraiser selling "Benny-Boyz Heavenly Honey" BBQ sauce, and with the help of his brother Eric, they traveled to Costa Rica to seek preventative treatment for esophageal cancer and potential residence. They returned to Houston later that year shortly before moving to Coffeyville, KS for an opportunity in ministry. His health worsened, so in 2019 they moved to Olathe, KS for medical attention.
During the pandemic year 2020, they attempted to move back to Galveston, TX near Kim's family, but illness necessitated Benjie be near his doctors, so they settled in Belton, MO. His health rapidly declined from April 2021 with extensive hospitalization and rehabilitation, and was under the care of a medical psychologist who was preparing him for a liver transplant and ongoing treatment for PTSD among other severe emotional challenges. In December he was approved for home hospice through St. Luke's Hospice, Kansas City, MO.
Benjie passed away on March 17, 2022 at 5:18pm from nonalcoholic liver cirrhosis. His death was preceded by his father, Harry, by almost one year. He is survived by his widow, Kimberly Keith Avery, and her daughter, Allisandra Fikes near Kansas City, MO; also survived by his four children including Cheri (Anthony) Wright and their daughter Lillian in Joplin, MO; Samantha (Kyle) Adams and their daughters Rosalyn and Elaine in Wilmer, AL; Joel (Destiny) Avery and daughter Scarlett in Platte City, MO; and Hazel Avery of Harrisonville, MO.

His ashes are being scattered in the Amarugia Lake in Archie, MO; near Mobile, AL off Dauphin Island; in the Elk River at the Shady Beach Campground bridge near Noel, MO; in New Caney, TX; and in the fishing harbor and beaches of Galveston, TX.
Benjie was a hero who fought battles only our Heavenly Father knows. Although extremely challenged due to many health emergencies, he expressed he was happily married, felt blessed with many wonderful friends, and was proud of all his children. Benjie spent the last years of his life striving to provide for his family, reconnect with his children, and pastor a church again. He was a lover and a fighter who wanted his family, friends, and most of all Jehovah God, to know he loved them with his whole heart.
