BARBARA JEAN WERNER, age 86, accepted the hand of her Lord Jesus, on December 19, 2013. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Church of the Resurrection.
Barbara Werner was born on November 27, 1927 to Raymond and Ethel Hatch in Topeka, Kansas. She grew up in the country and attended a two-room school house through the 8th grade. As a young girl she participated in many community dance shows and contests.
Barbara and her mother spent the summers during the 1930's in Georgetown, Colorado visiting her grandparents. Later, throughout the 1960's and 70's, she would return to the mountains with her family on camping vacations every summer.
She attended Washburn University in the 1940's, where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and where she met her future husband, Darrell.
Darrell and Barbara married in 1950 and enjoyed 63 years of marriage. The first ten years of their marriage they lived in Dayton, Ohio where she worked for American Airlines until they began their family in 1955. In 1960 they moved back to Kansas to be close to their families.
Barbara and Darrell enjoyed an active life playing golf and bridge at Brookridge Country Club, crewing for a hot air balloon, and traveling extensively. She was very creative, writing amusing poems, tole painting, sketching, and creating her beautiful backyard rock gardens. However, the most important thing in life to Barbara was spending time with family.
Barbara is survived by her husband of 63 years, Darrell, her children Karen (Mike) Grogan, Lisa (Thom) Tomlinson, and Greg Werner, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
