Barbara Elaine "Laney" Johnston passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 29, 2022 at the age of 80 at Olathe Hospice House.
Elaine was born on January 22, 1942 in Greenwood, Ark., to Elmer and Lee Dean McHargue. She grew up in the small mining town of Climax, Colo., She graduated from Climax High School in 1960 where her classmates said "being cheerful must be her motto". Soon after high school she attended business school in Ft. Smith, Ark. She then married Jim Windorski and they made their home in San Diego, Ca., having Jeff, the first of two children. They later moved to Denver, Colo., and had their second child, Shelbe.
In the early 70's she relocated to Atlanta, Georgia where she met the man who would become the love of her life, Bill Johnston. They were married in 1974 and then moved the family to Marathon, FL where Bill and Elaine ran and managed the Hurricane Resort for several years. Eventually, Bill obtained a Real Estate License and Elaine worked as a legal secretary while they raised Jeff and Shelbe in their beloved Florida Keys. In 1984, they moved to Palm Harbor, Fl., where Bill continued his Real Estate career and Elaine began a 30 year career as an Executive Assistant at Quimby and Assoc and later Chronos Wealth Management.
Elaine recently relocated to Benton House of Olathe to be near her family. In the short time she was living at Benton House, she made many friends and was well loved and cared for.
Elaine 'Laney', is preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Bill, and her parents Elmer and Lee Dean of Greenwood, Ark. She is survived by her children, Jeff Windorski and his wife Sandra of Lakeside, MT., her daughter, Shelbe Krone and her husband, Adam, of Olathe, KS., step-son, Bennett Johnston of Naples, Fl., and her brother, John McHargue and his wife Barbara of Richmond, VA. She also has 5 grandchildren: Ashley, Christopher, Courtney, Sam, and Grace, and one nephew, Sean, as well as extended family in Colorado and Arkansas. Elaine enjoyed spending time with her large network of friends in Florida who will miss her dearly, especially their Thursday "therapy" sessions.
