Barbara Breidenthal Sutherland, 88, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away Friday, January 6, 2012. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to Children's Mercy Hospital.
Barbara was born on Kansas Day, January 29, 1923 in Kansas City, Kansas. She graduated from Wyandotte High School and attended the University of Kansas where she studied art and became a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. While at the University of Kansas she met John Sutherland on a blind date. They were married for 65 years.
Barbara enjoyed playing bridge with her friends and caring for others. She was a life long member and an active volunteer of the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection. She was a member of the Junior League of Kansas City. Barbara was a generous volunteer at Manor Care Nursing Home and former volunteer at the Children Therapeutic Learning Center and a board member of Florence Crittenton.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; Maurice and Louise Breidenthal, brothers; Maurice Breidenthal, Jr., Jack Breidenthal, and sister; Dorothy Callahan Jenkins.
She is survived by her husband; John Sutherland, children; Janie Sutherland McLiney and husband Joe, John Sutherland, Jr. and wife Mindy, Christopher Sutherland and wife Paige, Tom Sutherland and wife Debra, and Mark Sutherland and wife Megan, 21 grandchildren, and 46 great grandchildren.
Barbara, known to her family as "Nana", was a wonderful friend, devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, and loved spending time with her family. She never missed a birthday or a chance to show her love to her family and friends.
