Alvin Schreiber, 89, of Olathe, KS peacefully passed away Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at his home. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 PM on Saturday, January 23, at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home. The family requests all attendees observe social distancing and wear face masks.
Alvin was born on January 4, 1932, in Kiel, Wisconsin to Alvin Carl and Margaret (Spindler) Schreiber. He graduated from Kiel High School, before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After rising to the rank of Sergeant, Alvin applied for and attended U.S. Air Force Office Candidate School. After completing his service, he was briefly employed by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in Jupiter, Florida. Following his employment with Pratt & Whitney, Alvin began employment with the Federal Aviation Administration as a computer programmer.
While Alvin was stationed in Jupiter, FL with the U.S. Army Air Corps, he met and married Frances Marie Floyd on October 7, 1951. Because of the military assignments, they lived in various locations throughout the American southeast and southwest eventually settling in Jacksonville, FL and raising their four children, Carol Frances, Nancy Louise, Joanne Leslie and Bruce Alvin. Alvin loved his family more than anything and built his life around his family. Alvin continued to work at the FAA until he retired in 1987. He spent 15 years of his retirement in the service of others by brailing books, starting with impressing thick paper strips and finished his volunteer work by using computer software. Alvin was an active community member by volunteering with the Lions Club International.
Fans of many types of music, they found a particular fondness for Latin music and drum & bugle corps marches, the latter being a good reason to visit performances at various locations in the U.S.
A lifetime commitment to the churches they attended, Alvin served as usher and deacon. They were a constant presence at church, with their current pastor remembering Alvin and Frances' usual location in one of the back rows of the congregation surrounded by their "church family". Post retirement, Alvin & Frances traveled to any of the remaining 48 contiguous states that they had not previously visited or lived, visiting the historic and cultural sites that always held their interests. While relaxing at home, Alvin and Frances would work crossword & word search puzzles. They always took time each afternoon to enjoy hot tea, in keeping with Frances' British roots.
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin Carl and Margaret Schreiber, and brothers Wilfred (Scrip) Schreiber, Norbert Schreiber, Herbert Schreiber.
Alvin is survived by his wife of 69 years Frances Floyd Schreiber; sister Marion Schreiber Kuether of Kiel, Wisconsin, daughter, Carol (Phillip) Magerus of Oklahoma City, OK; daughter, Nancy (Edward) Small of Fulshear, TX; daughter Leslie (Sean) Wright of DeSoto, KS and son Bruce Schreiber of Gaithersburg, MD. Grandchildren Derek Wright of Merriam, KS; Sarah Laws of Kansas City, MO; Stefanie Clark of Fulshear, TX; Bradley Small of Fulshear, TX and three great grandsons, Derek Wright, Jr, Liam Clark and Beau Wright.
