Mr. Nordhem was born in the Logan Square area in Chicago in 1918. His father died when he was a young boy and he and his mother faced many hardships during the Depression. After graduating from high school he graduated from the Walton School of Commerce in Chicago. During the 1930's he became a nationally ranked table tennis professional who known for his tremendous backhand. His first professional work was in Duncan, Arizona where he worked as a controller for the Southwestern Mineral Company. While working there he was drafted to the Army. He served as a staff sergeant during World War II initially in Ft. Douglass, Utah and was recruited to work as the Finance Manager at a Portland, Oregon War Department operation at Montgomery Ward & Co. After the war, he met Shirley while skiing. They married and moved to Eugene, Oregon, where he co-owned the Willamette Tractor Company. Returning to the Chicago area four years later, he was employed by Arthur Young as a management consultant. In 1960 he began working for Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago, where he was first involved in the implementation of their initial computer system and as their National Credit and Customer Service Manager until retirement in 1977.
An avid sailor and traveler, he took a year-long trip on his sloop, traveling down the Mississippi River, through the Gulf of Mexico, around Florida, and up the East Coast into New York Harbor, through the Great Lakes and back to Chicago. Having raised their three children, in 1988 Al and Shirley moved to Savannah, Georgia, where they lived on Skidaway Island until 2007. Al continued to sail and fish and explore the southern coastal area with Shirley. In January 2007, Shirley and Al moved to Overland Park, Kansas, to be nearer their children.
We will dearly miss this Renaissance man, good friend, mentor, husband, father, and grandfather.
