Known as "Al" to his friends and family, Alton B. Holcomb passed away Saturday, April 2, 2011 at the Veteran Administration Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. The family suggests contributions to The Salvation Army, 3637 Broadway, Kansas City, MO 64111-2503.

Al was born to Raeford and Edith Dodson Holcomb. Preceded in death by his

parents and his sister Judith Childress, he is survived by his wife of 33 years Joan Holcomb as well as his son Matthew Holcomb of the home, his daughters Kim Ayann,Carrie Letterle, and Lesli Gomez, all of Las Cruces, NM, his brother Richard Holcomb

of Kernsville, NC and his sister Gay Zimmerman of Mocksville, NC. He was grandfather of seven and great-grandfather of three.

A 1955 graduate of James A. Gray High School in Winston-Salem, NC, Al served

in the US Air Force until retiring in 1978. His service included assignments in Hawaii,the US embassy in China and several in the Joint Chiefs of Staff Office at the Pentagon.

After retiring from the Air Force, Al worked in the private business sector for seven years and finished his career working for the US Postal Service in the Northern Virginia area. He moved his family to Olathe, Kansas in 2000 where he has lived out his retirement years.

Interment will take place during the week of April 11, 2011 in North Carolina.
