He served with the 101st Airborn making a jump in Normandy and his final one across the Rhine where he was wounded. Earning a Purple Heart, he returned home where he attended Pittsburg State Teachers College and met his wife Lois Engelhardt. Al and Lois were married for 63 years and had two children. Al coached football and taught in Blue Mound, Sedan and Independence Kansas. He left teaching to go into school administration in Olathe and Lawrence and ended his career as the Culligan Dealer for Metro Kansas City.
Al enjoyed his social time with his many friends, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He never missed an opportunity to attend a party or celebration no matter when or where it was held. Al and Lois were able to travel to Slovania on several occasions to visit Al's family members.
Al was preceded in death by his 8 brothers and sisters, his wife Lois and his son Mikel. He leaves behind his daughter Connie (Bill) Rishworth, grandchildren Robert Rishworth, Candice (Joe) Shum and Patrick Cerne.
