Albert "Al" LaVern Adkins Sr., 85, went to be with his Savior and Lord on June 8, 2011. Al was a licensed minister, automobile technician, small business owner, and a handyman in a variety of trades. Al was born in rural Harrison County, Mo., and graduated from Central High School in Kansas City, Mo. For many years he provided automotive repair services through Adkins Auto Service, then managed the film library for Kansas City Youth For Christ. Later Al became the owner of that ministry, which expanded into Dynamic Audio Visuals. He, along with his wife and other family members, served 4,000 churches over a three-state area with Christian Audio-Visual resources. In more recent years Al used his talents in a variety of fields including building construction projects and teaching home and small-group Bible studies. Al was an active member of College Church of the Nazarene, and his greatest passion in life was studying and teaching God's Word.
Al is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Lee Adkins, of the home, son Gary L. Adkins and wife Martha, Fuquay, N.C., son Albert "Hap" Adkins and wife Kathy "Kat," Olathe, son William Lee Adkins and wife Kim, DeSoto, son Robert Lynn Adkins and wife Brenda, Spring Hill, son John L. Adkins and wife Kiersten, Olathe, 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. A celebration of his life and ministries was held at College Church of the Nazarene on Friday, June 10.
