Akiko Susan Attwood, 88, moved to her heavenly home on December 29, 2022. She was at home in Olathe, KS surrounded by her family. She is survived by her two children: Diana Attwood of Olathe, KS (son Carter) and Jeffrey Attwood of Olathe, KS (wife Stephanie and sons Easton and Carson), as well as many extended family members in her native Okinawa, Japan.
Akiko was born November 26, 1934, in Sosu, a village in Okinawa, Japan, where she was raised by her grandmother Shichiya Taira. She moved to the United States in 1961 and earned her US citizenship on January 25, 1966. Akiko spent most of her life in the Kansas/Missouri area but moved to San Diego in 2000 to live with her daughter. She then moved to Olathe, KS with her daughter in 2009 to be closer to her son and his family.
When Akiko first moved to the United States, she was a homemaker and seamstress. She later worked at Wal-Mart as a department manager, and often mentioned how much she enjoyed her job because she loved her coworkers and customers. Her passions were her family, sewing, and cooking. She was a gourmet cook in her native Japanese dishes, as well as a master of American cuisine.
Akiko did everything with honesty and integrity and relied on her deep Christian faith to embrace peace and positivity, her trademark qualities. She was a Godly woman who set an example for her children and grandchildren that will lead them all their lives. Her faith also made her final journey to Heaven something that she was prepared for because of the promise of eternal life through Christ Jesus.
There are no words to express how grateful and blessed we are to have had the support and services of Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care. Their compassion and empathy were genuine, and their nurses were critical in our ability to keep our mom at home, in her own bed, where she was comfortable and happy. In lieu of flowers please consider a memorial donation to Kansas City Hospice Please copy and paste the following link into your browser: https://www.kchospice.org/donation/
A private family service will be held on January 3, 2023. A celebration of life will be scheduled in the Spring.
