Stanley Birley, 91, of Olathe, KS left this world for his eternal home in heaven on December 31, 2022. He was born an identical twin on December 6, 1931 to Lester and Gertrude (Schurmann) Birley in Waterloo, IA.
Stanley was raised in Waterloo with his sister, Marjorie, brother, Vernon (Bud) and identical twin brother, Stuart. He graduated high school in 1949 and went on to earn a Mathematics degree from Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in 1952 and a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State University in 1958. Stanley served in the United States Air Force as an Officer (Major) from 1952-1957. In 1961, he married Betty Jean White in Des Moines, Iowa. Stanley worked for Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids before moving to Bettendorf where he started his career working as a Mechanical Engineer for the Federal Government at Rock Island Arsenal. He was transferred to Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey until his retirement. After relocating to Kansas, Stanley enjoyed working for Johnson County as an appraiser.
Throughout his life, Stanley had a special bond with his brother, Stuart, always sharing and caring for each other in a heartfelt way. Time with family was always a priority. He loved nature especially birds and animals. Stanley will always be remembered for his generous, kind heart and sweet spirit.
Stanley is survived by his loving children Garry of Olathe, KS and Mary (Steve) Janschek and grandchildren Seth and Caleb of Lake in the Hills, IL.; a sister-in-law (Inge Birley) of Flower Mound, TX and a brother and sister-in-law (Roger and Kay White) of Lincoln, NE and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, a brother, his identical twin, Stuart, his wife of 60 years, Betty Jean, and infant son, James.
A private celebration of his life will be held at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home on Saturday,
January 7, 2023. Burial will be Monday, January 9, 2023 at Oakland Cemetery in Centerville, Iowa.
