Dwight Edward Delp age 73, of Olathe, KS, passed away on September 20, 2016. He was born on August 16, 1943 to Charles and Ellen (Izzard) Delp in Sault Ste. Marie, MI.
Dwight's father had a career in the U.S. Army, so the family moved frequently, living for a time in Washington, Arizona, Kansas, Germany and California. Dwight was active in the Boy Scouts of America, and enjoyed band, Civil Air Patrol and football.
Dwight graduated from North Salinas High School, Salinas, CA, in 1963, then attended Northwest Nazarene College (now University) in Nampa, Idaho for three years before joining the U.S. Army. He served his country proudly in Washington, Georgia, North Carolina and Germany.
Dwight met his future wife, Lavon Brown, while he was in the Army. Dwight and Lavon were married in 1968 and spent their first year together in Germany. The couple moved to Colorado, living in Colorado Springs and Canyon City, while Dwight attended and graduated from Nazarene Bible College. Dwight and Lavon's two children, Lisa and David, were born in Canyon City.
Following graduation from Nazarene Bible College in 1972, the family moved to Dunsmuir, CA, where Dwight served as pastor of the Dunsmuir Church of the Nazarene. Dwight and Lavon raised their children in Northern California, living in Redding and Vacaville, where Dwight worked as a plumber/pipefitter.
Dwight's faith was always his priority, and he enjoyed singing in the choir and serving in other capacities.
Dwight also loved the outdoors, and the family enjoyed camping, hiking, fishing and canoeing in nearby mountains and lakes. Dwight's hobbies included oil painting, woodworking and gardening.
Dwight's family was always his delight and joy. One of his great pleasures in recent years has been going to one of his children's homes for family get-together's. He loved just being around all of his children and grandchildren. Dwight attended as many of his grandchildren's games as he could, most recently watching great-grandson, Ryker's, first T-ball game. Although Dwight lived quite a distance from his siblings, he enjoyed phone calls and kept in close touch with each one.
Dwight loved people, and was blessed with friends in his neighborhood, church, dialysis clinic, and a recent brief stay at Delmar Gardens. It has been said "To have friends, you must show yourself friendly." Dwight was such a man.
Dwight is survived by his loving wife Lavon; children Lisa Ann Smith (Tim) and David Edward Delp (Sheri); siblings Marty Mathis, Francis Delp, and Philip Delp, grandchildren Justan Smith (Sami), Jessica Smith, Jordan Smith, Zele Smith, D.J. Smith, Kylie Delp, Caleb Delp, Shelbi Hawkins Dubois (Ted), and Sawyer Hawkins, and great-grandchildren Ryker and Taryn Smith, and Eva Delp.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Theron Delp, and sister Lynda Teague.
